Get Your Caffeine On at the Winston Edward McKay’s

The Winston-Salem Edward McKay’s has a new addition — Krankies Coffee Shop! Krankies, our favorite Triad java purveyors, opened a kiosk in amongst the book stacks and CD racks in late April. It’s the freshest coffee in town. Stop by anytime during regular Ed McKay hours for a cup of coffee or a delicious espresso drink. Krankies also stocks fresh baked goods provided daily by the Zevely House. We’ve also added new patio furniture outside so you can enjoy your caffeine jolt in the beautiful spring (and summer) weather.

Help Raleigh! Vote for the Nonprofit Of Your Choice!

Help the Raleigh Edward McKay Used Books decide to whom they should donate the leftover trade credit!

(THE POLL IS CLOSED! THANK YOU!)

Sometimes customers opt not to take the trade credit we offer them for their merchandise, but they still want us to take their items. We were at a loss for what to do with the trade credit we’ve been accumulating. In the spirit of the season we’ve decided to donate the trade credit to a local charity.

The problem is, the staff here couldn’t come to a consensus on who should get all the trade credit. We’ve picked 4 charities from the area but we need you, our customers, to help us decide who should get the credit. There is almost $1000.00 to divide up amongst the charities. Vote for the charity of your choice and on December 18th we will tally the votes. Remember the gift of trade credit isn’t just from the store but from all of you who vote.

Here are the four charities:

Helping Hand Mission — http://www.helpinghandmission.org

* Helping Hand Mission is a locally-based national nonprofit that our staff really believes in. We wanted to support the organization in the best way we know how — offering trade credit to the victims of fire so that they can buy books, movies, music or kid’s books to replace those they lost and to start their collections over.

Helping Hand’s Mission is to:

* Provide relief and support to needy families and victims of fire.
* Distribute food and clothing to persons in need.
* Direct people incapable of handling their business to appropriate sources for help.
* Train and educate the unemployed and help them to find employment.
* Help persons become self-sufficient.
* Restore dignity and pride to those who have had difficulties as a result of a lack of services and resources.

Boys & Girls Club of Raleigh — http://www.wakebgc.org/index.html

* The newest location of the Boys & Girls Club is opening the last week of November in our neighborhood. Located on Brentwood Rd in the old United/Rentall building, the club will be able to offer the kids in our neighborhood a safe place to spend time out of school. Our goal is to offer the new club trade credit to purchase items for educational and entertainment purposes and to welcome our new neighbors.

Boys & Girls Club Mission

The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.

The Boys & Girls Clubs provides:

* A safe place to learn and grow.
* Ongoing relationships with caring, adult professionals.
* Life-enhancing programs and character development experiences.
* Hope and opportunity.

Salvation Army, Raleigh, NC — http://www.keepthebellringing.org

* The Salvation Army is one of the most easily-recognizable nonprofits this time of year. We’re all familiar with the Santas outside our local grocery, ringing the bell. We want to do something a little different to help with the locally run women and children’s shelter. Our goal is to offer the shelter trade credit to stock up on children’s books, movies, and more to make their environment that much more comfortable.

Emergency Shelter for Women and Children

The Women and Children’s Emergency Shelter is a 34-bed facility focusing on homeless women with children and those fleeing domestic violence. A waiting list is maintained for women with children. Single women are not placed on the waiting list. Women with children looking for shelter in the immediate future should call and request to speak to a caseworker to be place on the list for admission. Women with children who are currently homeless are urged to call or visit the shelter at 4:30 p.m. for overnight-only admission.

Ronald McDonald House of Durham — http://www.ronaldhousedurham.org

* A last minute entry into the contest, the Ronald McDonald House of Durham offers a service to families in need that we felt compelled to help. The trade credit will be used for kid’s books and movies to get ill children through their treatments while in the hospital. It will also be used for books for their parents so they can try to relax and enjoy a good read while taking care of their children.

McDonald House Mission

We provide safe, comfortable, affordable housing to seriously ill children and their families while the child is receiving treatment at Duke Children’s Hospital or other local hospitals.

Sick children need more than quality medical care. They need the emotional support of family. Here in our home-like setting, away from the atmosphere of the hospital, families rest, eat, talk, play and mend together. Our parents share their worries and concerns with one another, and offer understanding and support. The children play and relax with others experiencing similar physical and emotional challenges.

We’ll announce the winner on December 19th. Of course if you’d like to do more than help us aside, any of these charities would appreciate your support! Visit their Web sites to see how you can help.

Happy holidays!
